Some explosive zombies for valentines day. They are a part of my little Mechs vs Zombies project.
2023, the whole of the Americas has been overrun by a mutated Ebola virus, turning almost everyone into zombies. What started as an humanitarian operation by the new superpowers of the world. Ended up as full-on land grab. Creating a new cold war with many open conflicts. The best equipment for this operation are mechs, fusion powered walking tanks. Great for clearing (sub)urban areas of zombies and other threats.
Thousands of survivors on American soil have formed strongholds. From there they do not only try to survive the zombies but also keep their country free of these mechanical invaders. They are the American Human Resistance and their main weapons are ZEDs; zombie explosive devices.

Here's something the I did for an art-test over the weekend. The top one is a speedpaint and the bottom one a more worked out version based on the speedpaint. I had very strict guidelines, like which character, what kind of environment and which rifle to use.
I really don't know why I keep doing these bloody art-tests. They eat up all my time and stress levels sore because the only feedback I will get is: yes or no. Maybe I do it in the hope that I can leave this unpredictable freelancing behind and join a nice team again. Anyway, it's always good to have some more work to add to my portfolio I guess.

Mechs, 3D and some zombies...

I've "secretly" been working on a new project for some time. It's a personal project that I'm not going to disclose to much about it except that it includes mechs and zombies. After some initial sketches I wanted to brush up my 3D skills and modeled the mech in 3DsMax. I often use Max to set up scenes but only very simple and basic, this one was a bit more of a challenge and it was very rewarding to get quite close to the initial sketch. For the buildings in the scene I booted up SketchUp for the second time and found it to be really great for simple geometry. Finally I had myself some fun playing around with the renders in Max. Now I just need to paint in the dozens of zombies and a shitload of destruction and fire. FUN!

A black ballpoint pen and three pieces A4 Paper later. I moved recently to a studio space I share with friends. This means my PC and Wacom are not available to me at home anymore. It felt really good to crank out these thumbnails on paper again. Sketching with a ballpoint can be though because you have to commit to you lines. I left all the mistakes in, let me know which one is you favorite.

Well, another one that took me a bit longer to finish than I liked (16hours). I guess that by stretching the work over a couple of days didn't help. Not working in an office has it's benefits but it also means that I get distracted easily by all kinds of things, either work or pleasure related. So to have actually finished this is actually quite a relieve.
This is not official Killzone art, it's more like fan art and to prove that I can do something along the style of the game.

It was about time I scanned something. These are done straight on paper with a ballpoint pen. I actually barely use pencils anymore. Somhow the pen feels better when sketching and mistakes can be lucky accidents...

Ikko Ikki Assassins

I finally got myself to finish this one. It's a bit of wink to Assassin's Creed but with a Japanese twist. I've struggled with the composition and I still think I might tweak it a bit later. The Ikko Ikki are and old Japanese "clan" that came forth out of a budist movement. These guys where mainly monks and peasants... can you tell I'm a big Shogun 2: Total War player :)
Anyway, it's nice to finally have a more finished piece down after all the 15 minutes sketches. Cheers!

I really want to see another MDK game. They were dark, funny and I have a lot of good memories playing those games. On top of that the main character is very distinctive by design and features a sniper rifle in the helmet... I mean that makes sniping easy and damn awesome!

I just had the urge to paint a APC for no good reason. I spent around 5 to 6 hours on it. I think that I will try a more extreme design next time. Anyway, I think that for an afternoon of painting the result is not to bad.

Well, hello there my beloved friends, I'm glad to see you still visit me at times. A lot has happened after I returned from my wonderful trip to Japan. The journey to the east awakened a slumbering passion for change and travel. I realised that haven't seen much of the world as much as I like in those 27 years I'm breathing. On my return to Holland I decided to make a change.

The first step was quitting my job at Triumph Studios. I have enjoyed my time there and worked with some great people. Still, after almost two years of being a little art minion at Triumph I needed a new adventure. I had no new job lined up but I thought; what the heck!
I was lucky to be in contact with a rather large developer & publisher and after some talks and chats I landed myself a job at... Ubisoft Massive!

I'm packing my stuff and I move to Malmo, Sweden at the beginning of August. I'm very excited to start working with my new team there at Ubisoft Massive. So goodbye Holland, hello blonde-ikea-h&m-abba people!

Stay tuned because I have some free time on my hands to work a bit on my art. Updates imminent!

Last Sunday I spend mostly on the couch watching tv and sketching away in my sketchbook. It was quite some time ago since I managed to render out a drawing with pencil. It really is satisfying though frustrating when you mess up and have to erase. Especially since my eraser is rather big and tends to erase more than intended.
Anyway, I made this drawing for the CGhub.com challenge; "Experiment Gone Wrong". I couldn't really come up with an original idea so I borrowed it from my favourite anime. I have to recommend you read the original manga novel. It's a classic that resonates still in the back of my mind.
Let's hope I'm not disqualified for the challenge... :)

The Witch is back!

Here's a work in progress (or work never to be finished) that I would like to call "the witch is back". I've spend a bit to much time on the line-art and the colours where a quick add-on. With every piece of art I make "should"ask myself what do I want to tell the audience. In this case it was; "Show a cool futuristic marine-squad escorting a sexy witch". I wanted to leave in the middle if she was a protected or the marines protect the surrounding people from her. Thinking back I could have experimented more with the composition. Oh well, hope you enjoy it.

The one on the top might actually get a new version of it because after I finished it I wanted to see more of the mountains in the distance. I might turn it into a panoramic shot. Here's the first of hopefully many environment sketches to come. I spent about and hour on it. I wanted to find out how to keep it simple but still make it look complex. The variation in colour was a bitch. It's so easy to lose grip on composition and contrast. I think this one was a good start, up to the next in this series of environments.

I saw "The Road" recently and I was quite taken by the atmosphere and visuals. No big SFX but a subtle view of a world gone bad. I have a passion for everything post-apocalyptic, I can't wait for the zombies to knock on my door.
Anyway, this character is a good old red-neck scavenger, looking for some human flesh ;)

It a good practice since my first love is characters.

Hello and welcome, take a seat. Coffee? Tea? I'm your waiter today and would you like to hear about our specials today? Yes? Great! In the corner we have John, he's 45 years old and drools a lot. Is good with animals and is a spast. At the bar we have Cindy, she's 32 and crippled. She loves the jonas borthe... If you are still reading this you must be very literate or have the attention span of a cop staking out an old folks home.
A blogger blog, it's one of those things you never thought of doing but eventually end up doing. Like getting a blow job from a homeless guy on the parking lot... wait, that never happened. Anyway, this is the continuation of my blog over at gillesketting.com, it was time to leave that piece of shit behind and start a blog here. For some reason I feel the need to fill this blog with rude and inane things. It wakes up the 15 year old in me that wants to rebel against everything. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what will come of this.
To finish this rant off I would like to add that I and the folks at Triumph Studios are working our ass off to finish Overlord 2! (aparently mentioning Overlord2 to my blog generates a shitload of hits!)
