Some More May Sketch a Day Stuff

These are all studies, the top one to show the technique I used to do the bottom ones. The video shows the whole process that took just over 2 hours in five minutes. The bottom ones are studies of the excellent BBC series War & Peace. I did them on my Cintiq Companion while freezing a frame on my TV. It was hard to get the colours right and I think that was probably, next to the composition, the biggest challenge. I really enjoy doing them but I prefer using reference but then overlay my own designs and ideas on top of it.

Various Recent Speedpaintings

The first two are doen for the Daily Spitpaint groupd on Facebook so they were done under 30 minutes. The titles are "Dead Planet" and "Glacier Lord". The other two took slightly longer.

Sketches from Scratch

After relying a lot on photo-ref for a while now I decided I needed to go back to zero and experiment with brushes and light. These are some that could withstand the light of day. I learned a lot from some lectures at the Industry Workshop event in London last month. Especially Jama's one on brush efficiency was eye opening. I might be addicted to his brush set...

Done for the Super Speedpainting Funtimes over on Facebook. The topic was "Night Watch".

Some Random Sketches

I just needed to do something else instead of work for a bit, so I did some late night sketches just before bed. I'd almost forgotten how much fun this can be.

The Abandoned Dwarven Towers of Muirendhor - Double Lunch-Break Speedpaint

The result of two lunch-breaks, I think I failed miserably when it comes to composition and values but I still wanted to share it. "The Abandoned Dwarven Towers of Muirendhor" In my universe Dwarfs like to compensate for their short stature.

Speedpaints - Random

I had an afternoon to kill and thus the speedpainting commenced. I tried to use no reference material and tried out some new brushes. It was good to unwind like this.

Killzone Inspired Sketches

Whenever I do character speedpaints I often end up with a bunch of Helghasts. For some reason the character designs from Killzone stick with me. Must be those glowing eyes or it's just a part of Dutch pride. Anyway, I thought it was time to do some proper Killzone inspired sketches to get it out of my system.
I went for a desert setting with these ones, mainly since it hasn't been featured in the games yet. However, I did want them to be more heavily armored, so I guess they're sporting climate-control in those suits. The desert setting kinda went out of the window along the line although some features may be reminiscent of it. I really enjoyed doing these and I think I might do a couple more in the near future. Of course this is by no means a job application...(or is it?!)

Repression of the slums

Same approach as the previous slums inspired "speed/matte-paint", only this time I spend a little more time. About 5 hours from start to finish, a lot of time is spend on gathering photo ref.

Slum Palaces

I did this one in about four hours while I was listening to the "Cloud Atlas" audiobook. It was supposed to be a speedpaint but four hours is no longer to be called a speedpaint I believe. I really need to do some more like this, using photo material is so much fun!

Favorite Samurai Movies Ever - First three.

I've had these sleeping on my hard-drive for a while now. I was once planning to do a whole series but like most things I plan to do they have to make place for the here and now. They're basically my version of the movie posters for my favorite samurai movies ever.
I've got a list of seven that I still want to do and I might want to revisit these along the line as this style is still under development. It's in that sense a bit of and experiment. When I go through my blog I notice that I switch styles like model changes clothes at a fashion show... oh well, you can't say I don't try.

Lunch-breaks are for Sketching

Well, this is another lunch-break sketch... Okay, I may have spent a little more than a lunch-break on it. I'm going to post a process gif soon. There's something about the second color variation that I really like. However, I was going for an empty city/earth and so the blue one is more fitting.

And more Lunch-Break Sketches

Since I don't have had the time to spent any time on personal work I like to cram in some sketching in my lunch breaks. Most of them go right in to the dustbin the others I post here.

Lunchbreak Speedpaints

Well, it's been awhile since my last update. The main reason is that I've started a new job at Jagex in Cambridge as a Marketing Artist. Therefore I had to move and had to leave my trusty PC in Holland. On top of that the only internet access I've had was at work on a very secured network which doesn't allow me to upload files...
Looks like I will have to do without internet at home for another two weeks (FFFFUUUU!)
I've done these at work during my lunch breaks. Since I have to do very polished and detailed illustrations during working hours it feels nice to do some loose speedpaints. I wanted to try out some new ways of approaching color, texture and light. It's an never ending exploration of trial and error.

PS. I'm well aware that I'm encroaching if not copying some well know artists their styles, it's just for research :)
