Some More May Sketch a Day Stuff

 

These are all studies, the top one to show the technique I used to do the bottom ones. The video shows the whole process that took just over 2 hours in five minutes. The bottom ones are studies of the excellent BBC series War & Peace. I did them on my Cintiq Companion while freezing a frame on my TV. It was hard to get the colours right and I think that was probably, next to the composition, the biggest challenge. I really enjoy doing them but I prefer using reference but then overlay my own designs and ideas on top of it. 

May Sketch A Day #1

It's that time a year again that means me and many other artists attempt to do a sketch a day for the whole month of May. This is the first batch heavily inspired by or based on Ashen Falls.

Sorry for the camera snaps but I like them better this way. I've been keeping a file open while I work on other stuff to quickly jot down any random ideas I have.

Daily Spitpaint Entries - 30 minutes or less.

It's very nerve-racking but also a lot of fun to do these Daily Spitpaints for the facebook group. From top to bottom; "Horned Helmets", "The Tudors", "Destroyed Warship", and "Demon Dog".

I just needed to do something else instead of work for a bit, so I did some late night sketches just before bed. I'd almost forgotten how much fun this can be.

Medieval Sketches and a New Job!

 

From the beginning of August I will start as a full-time illustrator at the home of the Total War series, Creative Assembly. I'm really excited and honored to be joining them.
These sketches have nothing to do with my new job but I had them laying around and figured I should post them. The top two environments were speedpaints done to come up with a mood and setting for a more detailed illustration, though I never got the time to do that.

20 Minutes Demons

Often when I close my eyes I see images of dungeons and castle grounds inhabited by demons, monsters and old gods. You may be wondering if I have some kind of mental dissorder, and you could be right, but it's Demon/Dark Souls that keeps haunting me. There's something about that game that gripped me and never let go... although I'm really really bad at it!Each one of these images took me no longer that 20 minutes, so again it's a lunch-break well spent.

Merry Sketchmess!

The only possibility I've had over the last two months to do some digital personal work was during lunch and after-hours at work. In between the dragons, sirens and knights I still have enough energy to whip out some sketches that hopefully one day will get some polish and can be called finished.
The dwarf was a brain-fart, something about it being more logical for them to have spears or halberds instead of axes. That way they can keep some distance between their taller enemies.
The other two are for a game idea of a melee sci-fi game that based on the idea that force fields only block fast projectiles therefore melee becomes relevant in modern warfare again... okay, anyway it's Halo with swords and hammers, happy?
I can wait to have a decent set-up at home again so I can spend some more time on these. Have a great holiday and see you in 2013!

Some Old Quick Sketches...

These guys were haunting my hard-drive so I had to let them out. Most of them were doodles that were never finished or just completely abandoned. The second from the top was the first sketch for what later became a finished piece. Okay, back to work.

Midnight 15 minutes sketches

These seem to become more and more about loosening up before or after work I do for clients. 15 minutes to get ready to "pixel-fuck" (excuse me for the term, "wacom-bate" is also available) the rest of the day. Hey, don't get me wrong I love to pixel-fuck but there's nothing like a worry free sketch once in a while. I think I will start posting them more often again... like I promised last time. Okay, now where did I leave those tissues again.
